Local polls boost Lib Dems

1.16.49pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 24th May 2006

The Liberal Democrats gained seats and councils in the local elections at the beginning of May. The party won more votes than Labour across the country.

Here in Hampshire, the Lib Dems retained control of Portsmouth and Eastleigh councils and have now taken over running Hart District in co-operation with a community campaigners group. Negotiations in Southampton are on-going after all three parties ended the elections with the same number of seats.
