Lib Dems slam 'stupid' bus cuts

7.03.47am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 1st Aug 2005

Hampshire Conservatives are pressing ahead with the biggest programme of bus service cuts in living memory. The cuts will affect 31 different services all over Hampshire. Twenty services will be withdrawn completely in October. Leading Conservative County Councillors ignored pleas not to make the cuts.

The Liberal Democrat leader on the Council, Adrian Collett said: "Thousands of people rely on these services to get out to do essential things. If these cuts go ahead they will leave people stranded." "At a time when our roads are getting more and more congested this is a stupid move."

The Lib Dems say it would make more sense for the Council to promote the routes to get more people to use them.

Before the elections in May, the Conservatives promised there would be no cuts to services.
